SUNDAY JUNE 15, 2014 LIGHT HOUSES IN THE U.P., Michigan

Visited a little church in Republic, Michigan.  Friendly folk.  Met one couple who go to south Texas in winter.  Some go to Florida for winter and here for summer.  Rainy, 50-61 degrees today and windy. They say this is unusual for this time of year.  Had coffe and rolls after church with the folks and visited.

Still can't find a rental for these.

This is a road we traveled.  Supposed to be shorter.  We were headed to find some lighthouses here in the Upper Penninsula.

Uh Oh!! now what!!!

Again??????

Copper was to Michigan as Gold was to California.  This is the Quincy Copper mine.  Of course, no longer
operating but used for tours down into the mine.  There are several  old mines in this area of Lake Superior.
Homes here are older.  A few newer homes on the water in areas.  But most are 2 story and old.  You can tell the snow takes a toll on them.

This is the Sand Hills Lighthouse built in 1919 and is now privately owned operating as a B&B.
Driving along Hwy 41 we found the 1871 EagleRiver Lighthouse.
We spotted Jacob Falls along the hiway.
This is a monestary and the Monks operate a Bakery in town.

At this site, John Jacob Aster lost his newly constructed boat.  He set it afire.

 Macho Man!!!!!

Copper Harbor Lighthouse must be reached by boat or cruises.  Built in 1848 it is part of Fort Wilkins State Park  The farther north we traveled.....there are no fast food stores!!!!!!!!

Fort Wilkins was built to keep the peace along the waterway here.

 Blacksmith shop.
