Roosevelt moved over 200 families in 1935 to colonize this part of Alaska..to start farming and dairy farming. The Matanuska valley and Knik river. They were from Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin and drew tracks of land arriving May 23, 1935. Some original homes and barns remain, although have been updated.
Close to the skin is a very fine hair, softer than cashmere , called qiviout...KEE-vi oute. Natives knit different patterns of lace for gloves, headbands, shawls, etc. Sell for mucho$$$$. I wanted some yarn but sells for 95. per 1 ounce skein!!!!! Ox are conbed and the hair is sent out to clean and spin into yarn,
