Drove to Sunset Crater Volcano erupted 1000 yrs ago. Lava rocks everywhere and also saw Wupatki Natl. Monument which is a 100 room Pueblo from the 1100's. , Oak Creek Valley, fault line, part of Flagstaff.
Drove to Oak Creek Canyon. Very scenic drive with hairpin switchbacks dropping 4500 ft This is over 14 miles on way to Sedona. Walked shops. Mike decided to get him a new ring. Shrine ring wore out so he got a Sleeping Beauty Mine Turquoise ring made by Calvin BeGay a Navajo from Gallup , New Mexico.
Drove 7000 ft. to Jerome, the town with the million $ view. In search of gold, several races of miners found copper and billions of $'s were mined. The town endured fire, shifting of buildings due to dynamiting, fire underground in 88 miles of tunnels. The population went from 15000 to 50. mines closed in 1953. Today Jerome is occupied with artists, musicians, historians and families. Pop. now approx. 500.
